Dracula: The Un-Dead
Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt
Dutton,Oct 2009, $26.95
ISBN 9780525951292

Twenty-five years has passed since the horrific events of 1897 ended with Dracula turning into dust; none involved have moved on as each remains haunted by the encounter with the Count. Mina and Jonathon married, but neither obtained closure when the vampire was killed; stressed and estrnaged, they conceal from their son Quincey what happened. Seward survives with heroin while Holmwood became a hermit. Their mentor Van Helsing obsessively lives for the return of Dracula as the vampire’s death was his life’s goal so he has nothing else. Scotland Yard believes Van Helsing was involved in the unsolved Ripper murders.

In 1912, Stoker is frustrated as he struggles to convert his horror thriller Dracula to the London stage. However, although the author knows the full truth, he and the others except perhaps the ever vigilant Van Helsing are unprepared for a gruesome serial killer horrifying London. Scotland yard once again believes a fanatic Van Helsing is deeply connected to the killings, but too old to perform them. Those involved with what happened back then find themsleves and their loved ones under siege as if Van Helsing’s belief the Count will return from the dust has occurred. The survivors of the previous encounter regroup to battle evil again although they are unsure who stalks them.

This is a super vampire thriller that brings forward the stars of Dracula into the Edwardian Era with a where are they now tale. The clever story line is fast-paced while introducing the audience to the survivors of the previous horrific encounter to include Bram Stoker. Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt explore the essence of evil and good through a cast of humans who have used psychological defense mechanisms to barely survive and a vampire who may or may not be Dracula, but has the same attitude re the food chain as well as a thirst for the blood of vengeance. Filled with terrific twists fans of Dracula and those who appreciate a strong historical urban fantasy will relish the THE UN-DEAD.

DISTRICT 9: Hailed as a Film We Can All Learn From

Jeff Rivera
This weekend District 9 blew critics away. This film works on all levels: action, adventure, sci-fi, horror, documentary and drama. It offers something for everyone, but more importantly, penetrates the hearts and minds of the viewer and aims to promote tolerance in a world of hatred.

Set in South Africa, the film tells the story of aliens landing on Earth by accident; their ship ran out of fuel and there is nowhere else for them to go. Rather than helping the aliens to leave the planet, humans keep them to learn their secrets, all the while keeping them in a squalid corner of Johannesburg called District 9. It quickly becomes a ghetto slum, littered with waste, crime and filth.

Forcing the view to question discrimination, this film speaks of larger social issues that it seems at first glance. Author and world traveler Nik Halik urges that everyone see this film. "I believe it will open a lot of eyes to larger issues facing the world," states Nik. Having traveled to South Africa and following a nomadic tribe across the African continent, Nik is no stranger to tolerance and acceptance. Nik uses his experience to promote the same ideas as District 9.

Nik halik is a motivational speaker and author of The Thrillionare. For more information:

Lauderdale.

Richard Warren Rappaport

Richard Warren Rappaport brings a unique sound to adult contemporary pop, combining an outstanding vocal performance and introspective lyrics with a superb production, as reflected in “Sail Into The Sun.”

An FMQB Top 20 Adult Contemporary hit, “Sail Into The Sun” presents a melodic and dramatic composition in a tropical style that speaks of endless time and enduring love. The song was originally engineered by Mark Greenhouse, then re-engineered and mixed by the legendary Tom Dowd and mastered by Mike Fuller at Fuller Sound. It was co-produced by Richard Warren Rappaport and Howard J. Wiener and is on ATNYL / A Top New York Label. Richard Warren Rappaport is a BMI artist.

Richard Warren Rappaport has dedicated "Sail Into The Sun" to the internationally acclaimed HOPE Public Interest Resource Center at the University of Miami School of Law. The HOPE program provides education and direct service opportunities to law students so they may engage in pro bono legal outreach within the community for those who are in need, including those in the arts.

“Sail Into The Sun” is heard on iStudioi.com and is available wherever digital music is found. Richard Warren Rappaport’s other releases include "Great Rock ‘N’ Roll" and “Louisiana Way,” also on iStudioi.

“Great Rock ‘N’ Roll” is a musical fantasy about the world of pop, tracing its roots to traditional rock and R&B, and delivered in a fascinating contemporary style. Making its debut in Philadelphia, and distributed by Universal, Philadelphia, "Great Rock ‘N’ Roll" received airplay in that city and throughout the Northeast. First engineered by Mark Greenhouse, then re-engineered and mixed by Tom Dowd and mastered at Fuller Sound, "Great Rock ‘N’ Roll" is the theme song for Rene’ Katz’s "Hello Hollywood" television show, which premiered on WHDT-TV in West Palm Beach, and is now seen exclusively on iStudioi Television. “Great Rock ‘N’ Roll” was produced by Richard Warren Rappaport and is on ATNYL / A Top New York Label.

"Louisiana Way" begins softly as a classic ballad and builds into a driving delta blues beat, and was picked by film producers Ken Atchity and Orley Adelson to be in the music soundtrack of the CBS Television Movie of the Week, “The Madam’s Family: The Truth About The Canal Street Brothel.” The song was then placed in consideration for an Emmy nomination for soundtrack music with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “Louisiana Way” was originally engineered and mixed by Tom Dowd, and also engineered by Will Edwards at Sprockets Music and mastered at Fuller Sound. It was produced by Richard Warren Rappaport and is on ATNYL / A Top New York Label.

A member of the Los Angeles Chapter of The Recording Academy, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Richard Warren Rappaport has been featured as a performer at many special events and benefit concerts, including the prestigious Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, and the Steinway/BMI Music & Arts Showcase series in Miami.

In other news, Richard Warren Rappaport was a guest speaker at the recent Miami Science Museum panel, “The Business of Music,” held at the museum. The panel was sponsored by the Miami Science Museum and the Creative Industries Committee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

Richard Warren Rappaport’s newest CD, “American Pop: The Music of Richard Warren Rappaport,” is due for release in September 2009.

Our Drac authors were rock stars at Vampire Con!

Posted by Picasa
On August 16, Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt came into Los Angeles to support the first annual Vampire Con and promote their forth-coming novel DRACULA: THE UN-DEAD. Attendence was excellent for the panel they did with other experts on the continuing fascination the public has with vampires. Afterwards, they were interviewed by a Portugeuse television show, and many people visited their booth to find out more about their book. From teenaged Goth girls to college professors, it swiftly became apparent that Dacre and Ian were in their element with a crowd of other hardcore Dracula fanatics.

Stoker, Dacre & Ian Holt DRACULA: The Un-Dead Bram’s great-grandnephew teams up with Dracula buff Holt to reclaim vampire lit from the unholy, unlettered legions churning out today’s fang-and-cloak stuff. This big, blood-filled kitchen sink of a debut boasts a vast cast of characters: Bram Stoker himself, as well as his nefarious Count, Jack the Ripper, Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, Oscar Wilde, “blood Countess” Elizabeth Bathory, a mysterious Eastern European actor and a whole bunch of extremely hot (but also extremely cold, being dead and all) vampire chicks of uncertain gender preference. Bathory is definitely the heavy of the story, and it seems she’s spoiling to outdo the number of grisly murders she is said to have committed in life, aided by a coterie of spidery bloodsucking assistants. As befits a multigenerational saga that springs from a book that had few survivors, some familiar characters are on the other side of the live/dead line, and some—well, some are indeed in the undead camp. There’s lots of good old-fashioned polymorphously perverse degenerate romping (“Every orifice in her body became his plaything”). Stoker and Holt are careful not to go too far afield from the conventions of the original; Van Helsing, for instance, comes armed with “crosses, wafers, holy water, a wooden stake, a Bowie knife, and a crossbow armed and ready to fire,” rather than some postmodern substitute for all that good wood and metal. Yet this competently (but no more than competently) written sequel—endorsed by the Stoker family, the publisher assures—has plenty of contemporary twists, including a weird Darth Vaderish turn at the end that some Bram-faithful readers may find magnificently silly. Flies and spiders, master! Big, messy, lots of fun—and not Stephenie Meyer.

Eminent Psychologist Slated to Speak at BNC Luncheon

Life is in Session…Are you ready? Start Your Journey Now!

If you think the need for women’s liberation and assertiveness training became obsolete along with LPs and tape players think again. It’s alive and well, and these days Dr. Lita Rawdin Singer thinks there’s an increased need for men and women to make themselves heard. “I still hear women asking their husband’s permission to go on retreats,” lamented Dr. Singer, Brandeis National Committee’s guest speaker for its September 24 Showcase luncheon starting at 11 a.m. at Via Brasil Steakhouse, 1225 S. Ft. Apache Road. The cost for the luncheon is $38 per person.

Singer knows of what she speaks because she draws her theories from years of counseling woman as a licensed clinical psychologist as well as a licensed marriage and family therapist and hypnotherapist and a professor at Graduate School. In a phone interview from her home in Santa Barbara, Calif., Singer affirmed there is still a battle of the sexes, and women are losing. Freeing women will free men so both can move from a domination-submission relationship to partnership! “It’s all about personal freedom,” said Singer. “It’s all about change, now. Your change. It’s not what happens in your life, but how you deal with it that matters.”

“Adam Was Trapped, Eve was Framed – Five Steps to Relationship Freedom” is the newly published book by this multifaceted professor and psychologist who started her own career as a stock broker but who quickly found that her real bent was helping other women to succeed in their relationships. “Finding love and inner peace is an inside job and starts with the journey within,” she said.

In addition to relationship therapy, Singer is a world-traveled master photographer, whose black and white images have been exhibited, published and collected by art lovers all over the world. Both her book and her photographs will be available for purchase at the luncheon. A book signing follows immediately after the luncheon. Proceeds support the BNC Students for Science scholarship.

Brandeis National Committee is a fundraising organization that supports the Brandeis University library as well as generating funds for Brandeis University medical research and scholarships. Brandeis University is a nonsectarian liberal arts and research university founded by the American Jewish community. "...a riotously good adventure." - Kirkus Reviews

"Royce Buckingham is a new voice in youth literature...His sophomore offering, Goblins! An UnderEarth Adventure, is equally funny as Demonkeeper and has so much action, you need to put the book down to take a breath! Young readers will love the grossness of the bugs, the swamp creatures, and the slobbering, slightly-stupid goblins. They also will discover bravery and honor from some very unexpected sources. - Janie Franz, MyShelf.com
