By Jim Whiting

The best in children's literature, selected by Jim Whiting.

Royce Buckingham

Royce Buckingham grew up in Richland, Washington dreaming of writing fantasy stories. He obtained an English degree from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA and received his law degree from the University of Oregon. His longtime goal of becoming published became a reality after 13 years of writing in his spare time while working as a prosecuting attorney.

In 2005, he hit a home run, selling his first story, Demonkeeper, to both Putnam and 20th Century Fox within a month. Fox has recently announced it has hired a director who's produced several animated films, including an adaptation of an award-winning book. Demonkeeper is now available in paperback and on Kindle. It is also a best seller in Germany under the title Damliche Damonen (Penhaligon), and a sequel will be released in Germany this November.

Royce lives in Bellingham, WA with his wife and two boys. He is represented by the Atchity Entertainment International management and production company in Los Angeles (www.aeionline.com). For more information or to contact Royce, visit www.demonkeeper.com.

The sleepy town of Sumas near the Canadian border sits atop a rambunctious world full of Goblins in Royce Buckingham's second humorous fantasy novel for kids, GOBLINS!

When PJ and Sam-a cop's kid and a juvenile delinquent-sneak into the Sumas woods in dad's police cruiser, they accidentally run down what looks like a mutant gorilla with a bad attitude. But it's no ape-it's a goblin, and thousands more live under the earth. Sam discovers a tunnel into the goblin world and quickly winds up in their clutches. It'll take all of PJ's strength and ingenuity to outsmart the goblins, save Sam, keep the creatures from finding their way to the surface, and get back to the station before his dad finds out.

"Royce Buckingham is a new voice in youth literature...His sophomore offering, Goblins! An UnderEarth Adventure, is equally funny as Demonkeeper and has so much action, you need to put the book down to take a breath! Young readers will love the grossness of the bugs, the swamp creatures, and the slobbering, slightly-stupid goblins. They also will discover bravery and honor from some very unexpected sources. - Janie Franz, MyShelf.com
